Favia sp. - a few days after being added to display.

Family: Faviidae.

Favia (fay'-vee-ah) are some of the most common corals in the world.

I got this coral for free at IMAC 2006 (International Marine Aquarium Conference) thanks to the FRAGexchange.com which had a vendor booth. You simply picked a coral, made a frag and got to keep it. This coral was cut from a larger colony with a tile saw.

This frag is about 5 inches long and 1.5 inches wide.

Favia sp. - four months later.
Picture taken September 2006, Nikon D70 Digital SLR, Sigma 105mm EX macro lens

Family: Faviidae.

This image shows the cutting four months later. It has regrown over the skeleton where it was cut from the parent colony and has started expanding onto the surrounding rock.

Favia sp. - three months later.
Picture taken December 2006, Nikon D70 Digital SLR, Sigma 105mm EX macro lens

Family: Faviidae.

Three months later the coral is clearly showing new growth as it encrusts along the rock.
